The word “Z71″ may be the RPO code granted to some special off-road package offered by General Motors to buyers. Tremec TKO Transmissions Part 1 – TKO-500 and TKO-600 Features and Background

Tremec is an OE transmission supplier that manufactures manual transmissions for Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Aston Martin, TVR, and many different medium and heavy duty truck applications. Their TKO is a high strength 5-speed overdrive manual transmission that was originally designed to be retrofitted into Mustang Fox body cars to replace the weaker T5, but will also bolt up to the standard Ford four speed passenger car bellhousing. When Tremec realized that enthusiasts were adapting it for GM applications, they decided to make it a little easier for folks (and capitalize on a huge opportunity, too) by producing a GM version of the TKO.
The GM version will bolt directly up to almost any standard Chevrolet/Buick/Olds/Pontiac passenger car four-speed bellhousing. Though only Ford and GM versions of the TKO are available, Mopar enthusiasts can get all the custom parts they need to adapt a Ford version TKO to virtually any Mopar V8 engine. The TKO has never been OE equipment in any production car, although its great-grandpa, the Tremec TR-3550 was in a limited-production Ford Mustang Cobra in the mid 1990s. The TKO is purely an aftermarket transmission designed for high-performance cars.
There are three basic models available, the TKO-500 and two variations of the TKO-600. The wide-ratio TKO-500 is rated for a continuous 500 lb.-ft. of torque, and offers a deep 3.27:1 first gear ratio and a 0.68:1 overdrive ratio in fifth gear. The close-ratio TKO-600 is rated for a continuous 600 lb.-ft. of torque, and has a 2.87:1 first gear and either a 0.82:1 overdrive or a 0.64:1 overdrive ratio in fifth gear. The rated torque capacities are said to be quite conservative, as there are a significant number of cars in the field with engines that exceed the torque rating by a large margin, and failures are rare.
The TKO uses a three-rail internal shift mechanism, eliminating any external linkage and the problems that go with it. The short throw billet aluminum shifter can be removed, flipped 180 degrees, and then reinstalled to provide an additional shift position. Optional custom shifters are available in several different configurations to mimic the shift positions in various musclecars. The TKO utilizes cast iron shift forks, a one-piece counter shaft, and tapered roller bearings on the input, output, and counter shafts for added strength.
Every TKO transmission provides both mechanical and electronic speedometer outputs. The mechanical output is a Ford design, but you can get hybrid speedometer cables for GM or Mopar applications. They also feature a reverse light switch and a neutral safety switch that can be wired into your vehicle’s existing harness. The transmission has an internal reverse lockout feature that prevents you from accidentally going from fifth gear into reverse. You have to go into the center of the “Neutral” gate before it will allow you to shift into reverse.
The Tremec TKO is an excellent choice for the musclecar or street rod owner that enjoys rowing his own gears and wants to drive his car to distant car shows or other events. I have one in my 1967 Pontiac Firebird and have driven a number of other cars with TKO transmissions installed. The overdrive makes a huge difference on the highway, and there aren’t many other transmission choices out there with overdrive that will stand up to the kind of power that the TKO can take. None of the other overdrive transmissions available at this time offer as much versatility as the Tremec TKO.

Have you ever wondered where the car company name of Aston Martin originated? With headquarters situated in Warwickshire, England, the Aston Martin Lagonda Limited line of luxury cars gathered its name from a hill climber named Aston Clinton and one of the founding fathers of the company, Lionel Martin. The history of the Aston Martin is rather intriguing, seeing as it earned the esteemed respect of being the glamorous auto selection for the series of James Bond books and movies.
The first mention of the vehicle came in the seventh 007 novel, “Goldfinger” (1964), promptly followed by a showing on the silver screen in the movie of the same title. The Aston Martin was then regarded as the company car in “GoldenEye” (1995) and his private vehicle in “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997). Additional Aston Martin models also made appearances in a variety of James Bond films, including the Volante and Vantage in “The Living Daylights” (1987), the Vanguish in “Die Another Day” (2002). The History of Aston Martins
The Aston Martin car company was founded in 1913 with the help of Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford. The two worked with one another to produce their first car under the company name, which incorporated the chassis of a 1908 Isotta-Fraschini and a four-cylinder Coventry-Simplex engine. Before the production of their first car took place, the company would have to overcome the obstacle of World War I, which had both owners serving their country under different branches of military. All of their machinery was lost in the war effort.
After the war, the company was re-founded in Kensington and rejuvenated with new car designs. In 1920, Bamford left the company and funding started to come from a different resource. By 1922, the company produced cars that fared quite well in the French Grand Prix, actually setting records in speed and endurance. Unfortunately, the company went bankrupt in 1924 and was bought by Lady Charnwood, only to see failure again in 1925. The factory closed in 1926, prompting Martin to walk away from the business.
That same year, the company was renamed Aston Martin Motors and received the backing of an assortment of wealthy investors. A known designer was brought in and racers, such as the 1929 Aston Martin International, the Le Mans, and the Ulster became quite successful. It wasn’t until 1936 that the company decided to produce cars that were suitable for the open road.
The Second War World slowed production, but in 1947, the company underwent yet another change in leadership. The cars now showcased the signature letters of “DB”, marking the initials of the managing director, David Brown. A number of DB series cars flourished, ranging from the DB2 in 1950 to the DB V8 of the 1970s. The V8 lasted until 1988 until the Virage line was introduced, followed by the Vantage in 1992. Several other models would trail, including the V12 Vantage (1999), the V12-engine Vanquish (2001), the convertible DB9 Volante (2004), and the 2006 V8 Vantage sports car.
Aston Martin Cars
Throughout the history of Aston Martin vehicles, there have been many different pre-war and post-war GT and supercars introduced to the public. Before the war, the company was responsible for models, such as the Aston Martin Standard Sports (1921-1925), Aston Martin International Le Mans (1932), and the Aston Martin 15/98 (1937-1939). With the Virage, the public embraced the possibilities of a sleeker, modern design and improved acceleration.

1970 Chevy Camaro
Nothing conjures up images of the good old days more than riding in one of the many “pony” cars produced in the middle of the 20th century. The 1970 Chevy Camaro holds a place in the heart of all Americans along with other classics like the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. While the ’64 Stang started the class of muscle cars, the Camaro quickly became one of the most popular cars ever produced. While the vehicle is still in production, it’s predecessors were markedly different than what consumers can buy brand new today. The second generation was manufactured to resemble foreign cars like the Jaguar and Aston Martin.
The 1970 Chevrolet Camaro marks the start of the second generation that would be produced until 1981. Many enthusiast believe that these cars were the ultimate muscle car ever to be produced. Compared with similar models like the Mustang, even the most basic Camaro were built with luxury in mind and offered the best sound-proofing and other technological features of the day. These enhancements made everyday driving very pleasant.
A lot of the drive train features were similar to those of the previous model years. There were however a few more options available. Base models came with a 4.1 liter six cylinder capable of up to 155 horsepower. The model year also saw the addition of a 3.8 liter six cylinder with slightly less horsepower than the standard engine mentioned above. Two V8 engines were offered including a big block 6.5 liter capable of 396 horsepower, along with the 6.6 liter V8.
Trim package available were the base model, Rally Sport, Super Sport and a Z-28 Special Performance package. The standard transmission for all models was a 3 speed manual, with an optional Turbo Hydramatic 4 speed automatic transmission or the 4 speed manual to compliment the larger engines. The high performance LT-1 5.7 liter V8 engine was an optional engine which was rare and expensive. The LT-1 was manufactured independently from all the others and is comprised of only premium parts.
The 1970 Chevy Camaro’s body style was also entirely revamped with a new fastback roofline. Rear side quarter windows were not designed into the car either, giving it a very distinct appearance compared with other “pony” cars from that era. The doors were made wider to allow for easier access. Base models came with an entirely different grille and bumper combination than the higher end models. Gas consumption was also kept in mind for the base and other budget models to accommodate the fuel crisis of the time.

Cadillac XLR – New Supercar

Clearly influenced by the styling the Mercedes-Benz SLK, the new Cadillac XLR shares the squared off look of other recent Cadillacs. It doesn’t look bad at all, although the headlamps look as if they have been squeezed to fit alongside the wide grille. The performance puts it up in the supercar class.
Top speed is limited to 155 mph, and it can get to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds – that’s slightly quicker than the Jaguar XK, thanks to the larger engine. Other competitors include the Mercedes-Benz SL and Porsche 911.
Looks can be deceiving. The car is wide and low, and looks big. In fact, it is quite compact, just 177.5 inches long and 72.2 inches wide. The car looks pretty good, particularly from the side. And you get a very practical SLK-lookalike opening roof. I guess most convertibles will be ‘metal’ convertibles soon, and the rag tops will disappear – maybe not on all supercars. To save weight, the roof of the XLR is aluminum and magnesium.
Good power output
Also, the XLR has quite a lot of power: 326 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 312 lb ft (423 Nm)at 4,400 rpm from GM’s Northstar 4.6 liter V-8, which could work a bit harder – 350-360 bhp, which would not be difficult to get from this engine, would make things more interesting.
As it is, it is enough to give the car quite a shove, and as the Northstar has an aluminum block and head with dohc and four valves per cylinder, it revs well. Variable valve timing improves the spread of power, too.
The engine is coupled to a rear mounted five-speed automatic transmission – 5 speeds put it at a disadvantage against the European supercars which mostly have six-speed automatics, but it is designed to give sporty shifts. Because the box is rear-mounted and the engine is fairly well back, front/rear weight distribution is 50/50.
New frame concept
Based on GM’s new platform for sporty cars shared with the Corvette, the XLR has a fairly light frame of hydro-formed steel tubes. Hydroforming changes the shape quite dramatically, putting in bends, changing the section to a rectangle and so on, making a lightweight frame. The passenger compartment is aluminum, and the body panels are composite plastics. This is a structure that can compete with many a supercar.
This is a fairly light structure, and despite the high level of equipment, the car weighs a healthy 3,643 lb (1,654 kg) which is just 130 lb more than the new lightweight Jaguar XK, and of course quite a bit more than the Corvette which has a lower spec but bigger engine.
Double wishbone suspension
Suspension is the familiar Corvette design of double wishbones front and rear with transverse leaf springs. The result is a simple, lightweight system that gives more roll stiffness – resistance to roll – than coil springs. Also, the spring rate is progressive, so it irons out big bumps in the road almost as easily as little ones. There is also a front anti-roll bar.
To save weight, the double wishbones front and rear are aluminum; of course, the composite leaf springs are light, too. Leaf springs of this type – just one leaf – are actually quite advanced technology as they don’t locate the wheels, and involve some clever manufacturing techniques.
The dampers are the new continuously variable electro-magnetic type, and the steering is speed sensitive, so you get more assistance at low speed.
As this is a Cadillac, it comes with a high specification. For Europe, navigation, and heated/cooled seats are standard as are adaptive speed control and a head-up display. The interior, with its wood, leather and aluminum trim is quite pleasant
On the road
Built in the same plant and to the same concept as the Corvette, the Cadillac XLR is best thought of a softened up Corvette intended for those who want a better ride.
Visibility is good thanks to slim pillars in the opening roof, and the almost flat hood. Like the Corvette both the instruments and driving position are good. There is also a head-up display which shows only the speed and which gear you’re in, and you don’t seem able to switch off. Pity. I did not find it useful.
The steering is not bad at all, and the XLR turns in well, as you’d expect with that weight distribution, but once you start pressing, you start to feel a little understeer coming in, which is not a bad thing for the market this is aimed at – more the luxury sports car that the hard charging supercar driver. But the car does not corner as fast as you could with more neutral steering.
The automatic is good. In D, the performance is not bad at all, and the kick-down is quite aggressive. There’s also a manual mode. Push the lever across to the left, and then nudge it forward for up, and back for down. This works extremely well, and actually is a manual. I mean, some of these actually shift up when you hit peak revs. Not this one; it just lets you stay there till you’re ready.
Overall, the Cadillac XLR is a good addition to the ranks of sporty two-seater luxury cars, but not up to the standard of the Jaguar XK nor the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Others to consider include the more powerful and sportier Corvette and Viper SRT-10.
